Take a look back at our 2017 and 2018 events to get an overview of the history of Ideas Abu Dhabi.

FORUM

Abu Dhabi Ideas Weekend 2018 explored four moonshot topics: polarization, cancer, artificial intelligence and the modern Silk Road.

PolarisationBridging the gaps
CancerAn end in sight?
Artificial IntelligenceOur super-intelligent friend?
The Modern Silk RoadA new era of globalisation?

Powerful trends that empower our lives also create the potential for greater fragmentation and polarisation between us. From online ‘echo chambers’ to polarisation in politics, what can be done to reverse this fracturing while still embracing the many benefits of modern life and technology?

Over 14 million people each year are diagnosed with one or more of over 100 types of cancer. After 250 years of cancer research and major advances in cancer detection and drug development, where are we now? Does the answer lie in developing personalised drugs tailored to our individual DNA? What will it take and how long could it be before the world is cancer-free?

From Google’s DeepMind to IBM’s Watson to Elon Musk’s OpenAI to Facebook’s AI bots, some of the greatest minds and companies are racing to define the next era of computing. Yet, many fear that unleashing the full potential of AI could become a threat to humanity. How can AI transform our lives? How can we be sure it stays friendly?!

With major investments in innovation and infrastructure both inside and outside its borders, China is shifting the focus of globalisation east. What are the wider implications for the global economy, regional security and public diplomacy?

Take a look back at our 2017 and 2018 events to get an overview of the history of Ideas Abu Dhabi.

FORUM

With Ideas Abu Dhabi’s premier in 2017, the city welcomed 20 of the greatest minds working on four of the most important challenges facing our planet across four moonshot topics in politics, socio-economics, health and sciences and technology.

System ShockCalming the politics of anger
Beyond GDP Targeting ‘all-in’ human welfare
Health Extending the healthy human lifespan
Space Living sustainably beyond Earth

Populist. Anti-elitist. Anti-establishment. The wave of sentiment emerging across parts of the globe is one of frustration towards those in charge, challenging the status quo and shocking the system: Brexit, Trump, Duterte – a common thread has emerged around the desire to ‘take back control’, whether from elites, foreign interference or a host of other perceived threats.

Measuring GDP was a uniquely 20th century idea. Born of the Great Depression and World War II, it was a time when governments needed to understand the size and output of their economies to more efficiently raise taxes and mobilize their nation’s resources.

In the last few decades our species has gained unprecedented control over its own biology, through advances in science and technology. ‘Organoids’ – ears, throats, livers and even hearts – are being grown in labs. Understanding the power of genes to regenerate cells is within our grasp.

We are on the cusp of a new age of exploration, but instead of setting sail for new lands we want to set foot on other worlds. Whether for profit or self-preservation, serious efforts are underway to tame this new frontier.
